Honor Swimmer (1976)

The information on this page was written the year of their induction.

FOR THE RECORD:  OLYMPIC GAMES: 1968 gold (200m, 400m individual medley; 4x100m medley relay), silver 100m backstroke); PAN AMERICAN GAMES: 2 gold; WORLD RECORDS: 8; NATIONAL AAU CHAMPIONSHIPS: 9; NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: 7; “World Swimmer of the Year”: 1968.

Charlie Hickcox’s three golds and a silver in the 1968 Olympics tied Sharon Stouder for the second highest medal harvest in a single Olympic Games up to that time (Donald Schollander led with 4 in 1964).  Hickcox led Indiana to 3 NCAA team titles (1967-68-69) causing his Hall of Fame coach “Doc” Counsilman to comment, “Coaching is a pleasure and it sure is easier when Charlie is your captain.”  Charlie Hickcox was named “World Swimmer of the Year” in 1968. Today he is a successful coach and TV color commentator.
