FOR THE RECORD: OLYMPIC GAMES: 1896 gold (400m freestyle); first Olympic swimming champion at Athens; US NATIONAL AAU Titles: 3 (440yd, 880yd freestyle; 1 mile swim); several distance freestyle records as a member of the Chicago Athletic Association.

Dr. Paul Neumann was the first Olympic swimming champion at Athens in 1896 when he won the 400 freestyle.  He later won three U.S. National AAU titles in the 440 freestyle, 880 freestyle and the mile swim.  He became a well known physician in Chicago and set several distance freestyle records as a member of the Chicago Athletic Association.
