Imre Sarosi (HUN)

Honor Coach (1981)

The information on this page was written the year of their induction.

FOR THE RECORD:  OLYMPIC GAMES: Hungarian Olympic Coach 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964; Coach of Olympians Eva Szekely, Katalin Szoke, Valerie Gyenge, Gyorgy Tumpek and Andre Szekely-Gyarmati.

Imre Sarosi was perennial Hungarian Olympic Coach during the second great period of his country’s world swimming dominance.  His 1952 women’s team (he shared the coaching with Hall of Famer Honoree Stefan Hunyadfi) dominated the girls’ swim program as no other team during, before or since, failing only in backstroke.  Three of the gold medal winners, Eva Szekely, Katalin Szoke and Valerie Gyenge came from Imre Sarosi’s home club as well as his national team, the unofficial Olympic team champion.  Again in 1964, 6 members of his Hungarian Olympic team were from the club he coached.  His last Olympian (Mexico & Munich) was his goddaughter Andrea Szekely-Gyarmati who trained with Sarosi on style and technique in her early development.
